The History of ISO 9000
Background
The concept of ISO 9000 frequents today's business world and consumer markets. But what exactly does ISO mean? ISO stands for International Standardization Organization, also meaning “equal” in Greek, “isos”. It implies equality in standards regardless of company size, products, services, or the country of origin. The ISO is a specialized international agency for standardization, and has now reached about ninety-one member countries.
ISO was founded by Europe and the United Kingdom in 1947, with headquarters at London. Today, the ISO headquarters has moved to Switzerland. In 1979, the ISO Technical Committee 176 (ISO/TC176) was formed for better quality management and quality assurance standards. In 1986, it developed the Quality Vocabulary (ISO 8402). In 1987, (revised 1994) it further
published the 9000 series which comprised the 9001, 9002, 9003 and 9004 for ISO quality management systems and standards.
